How The Drought Affects Southern California

Much of California is experiencing drought conditions of a highly severe nature. Residents of Southern California may have seen Caltrans signs by the freeway that say, "SEVERE DROUGHT HELP SAVE WATER."

Drought can be scary for all residents, and especially for homeowners who have a long-lasting investment in the community where they live. But what can you do to help?

  • Take shorter showers. Maybe you already take short showers, but your teenagers and young children might not. Talk to the entire family about shortening the length of their showers.
  • Reduce your water usage when washing dishes. The water doesn’t need to be flowing full-blast out of the faucet when you’re washing the dishes. Take time to adjust the water flow to a light spray.
  • Turn off the water when brushing your teeth. You’ve probably heard this one before, and maybe you already do this. Talk to your children and family members about doing the same.
  • Reduce your lawn sprinkler rotation, or switch to a desert-landscape lawn. Desert landscape lawns are very chic and also very environmentally friendly! But if you’re not ready to make that kind of landscaping change, try reducing the amount of water that you give to your lawn. Make sure to water your lawn at night to reduce the effects of evaporation from the sun.
