International Earth Day

In March our thoughts turn to spring, and it is a natural time to appreciate the miracles of the planet around us. Perhaps, that is what John McConnell had in mind when he proposed International Earth Day back in 1969. The Iowa native presented the idea of International Earth Day to the San Francisco, California Board of Supervisors who eventually approved the concept. They weren’t the only ones. Eventually, International Earth Day received the support of U.N. Secretary General U Thant, who eventually signed a proclamation to that effect in 1971. It is designated as a time to reflect on what we can do to take better care of Mother Earth.

International Earth Day is always observed on the Vernal Equinox (first day of spring), and should not be confused with Earth Day in the United States, which is celebrated in April. Both are worth observing as we all focus on better care for our planet.
