Lighting Safety: It’s Time to Decorate for Christmas!

Hanging Christmas lights shouldn’t be a dangerous task, but there are precautions everyone should follow when doing so:

Never Alone

A good rule of thumb is: if you use a ladder, then use a buddy. Though there may be no snags in your process, it’s always smart to have someone to help out if anything goes wrong. A gust of wind blowing over your ladder, a footing slip, uneven ground and a tipsy ladder—these are just a few of the reasons you might find yourself in need of a helpful hand. And this doesn’t even take into account the helpfulness of having someone on the ground to plug things in or hand up extra lights if your run low.

Safety Over Décor

Have fun decorating, but remember to keep safety first:

  • Don’t overload your outlets
  • Only the same type of lights connect to the same outlet – never try to string together LED and incandescent, or two mismatched types of lighting.
  • Only use outdoor lights when decorating outdoors
  • Keep cords out of trafficked areas – tripping over cords can caused exposed wiring, not to mention a skinned knee or bumped head!

In the end, it is much more important to have a fun and safe holiday than one rife with injury or damage. For more tips on safety and homeowners insurance in California, contact Ron Young Insurance today!
