Packing and Storing Holiday Decorations

The holiday season has come and gone and your holiday cheer has likely left as well, yet your Christmas tree, ornaments and other holiday decorations are still up. While no one looks forward to this time of year and as daunting a task as it may be, the decorations have to be packed and stored so they are ready for next year.

To help make this year a little less stressful, here are a few tips for packing and storing decorations so that maybe it won’t seem like such a chore:

  1. Replace Cardboard with Plastic – Cardboard has been known to damage holiday decorations with moisture and acid, so it’s better to store your items in plastic storage containers.
  2. Throw Out Damaged Items – As you’re disassembling, if you come across any damaged items that you cannot or do not want to fix, throw them away. If you can fix them, do so immediately before packing them.
  3. Wrap It Up – Make sure that all of your breakable and sentimental items are wrapped in bubble wrap. More often than not, when delicate items are just thrown in a box, they will come out damaged and broken next year.
  4. Don’t Overload – Be careful when packing your decorations, as you don’t want to overload any container. This makes the containers hard to move and also makes it harder on you next year when you go to unpack.
  5. Sort and Label Your Containers – Sort your holiday decorations by room, color, shape, size, value, etc. Then label the containers appropriately.
  6. Be Careful Stacking – When you go to store the containers in a self-storage unit, your garage or your closet, make sure that the heaviest containers are always on the bottom and the lightest containers are on the top to avoid any unnecessary damage from the weight.
  7. Eliminate Knots and Tangles – When it comes time to decorate for the holidays, you pull out your lights and they are all knotted together with hundreds of tangles. Eliminate this by wrapping your lights around a coffee can or spool before you pack and store them away.
